Introduction to Instructional Design for Blended and Online Learning - OPL Facilitated Course
(6 weeks, 2-4 hrs/week)

This course offers participants the starting points of instructional design in blended and online learning environments. Participants in this course will begin to plan a portion of a blended or online module based on introductory instructional design techniques. Participants will apply their knowledge to their own shells and/or web 2.0 tools and build as they move through the course. They will also share their course building plans and experiences with colleagues throughout the process. The focus is on developing participant understanding of how key instructional design principles can be applied to create a dynamic, engaging, and meaningful learning environment.

Learner Outcomes

  • Articulate introductory best practices in instructional design for blended and online learning environments.
  • Understand the power of incorporating a few simple tools in dynamic ways to impact student learning.
  • Understand the power of incorporating digital and online tools throughout the learning process, not just in the final product.
  • Create a module plan that you can continue building on after the course.
  • Analyze examples of blended and online learning modules to understand design elements.
  • Use a course design planning template and a course design rubric to guide your work.
  • Become proficient at manipulating and incorporating some major functions your own D2L shell.
  • Engage in an introductory exploration of instructional design that explores the intersections between learning management systems and web 2.0 tools.

Note: This is an online course. Participants are encouraged to attend the weekly BlackboardCollaborate/Elluminate sessions to help develop community and deeper understanding of the course content.
